February Mobility Snack: Seated Spinal Mobility at Your Desk

A quick and easy follow along video to get your spine moving at work

I got a message on YouTube from someone saying that they thought it was bad to flex your spine since it encourages the same position we get from looking at our phone.

This is a big misconception about posture, your body and movement. We have been taught for far too long that our spine should be this static thing. It’s not a static thing at all.

The problem is not the position you look at your phone in. The problem is the amount of time we spend fixed in that position. They say the worst posture is the posture you spend the most time in.

But the spine is fluid. Your spinal joints just like your other joints crave movement for optimal health. The less we move, the less mobility we maintain. Maintenance of ranges of motion is important. So being able to flex and extend the spine is important.

We also should consider the fact that the spine is multiple joints and not just one joint. For this reason it’s important to try and articulate our spine more deliberately and establish a deeper connection with the tissues up and down the length of your overall spine.

This mobility snack is designed to help you get a little more movement into your spine, especially if you sit a lot.
