It’s the last month of 2024. Time seems to have flown by this year. Some of us are winding down, while others of us are ramping up. The new year presents new challenges and new opportunities. It may be difficult to be optimistic, knowing some of the things 2025 has in store for us. However, we should focus on what we can control.
"Think globally, act locally" - Patrick Geddes
I’ve written in the past about the need for action in your local environment while continuing to think about global outcomes. The Quote"think globally, act locally," which means to consider the broader global impact of issues while taking action at a local level is often attributed to Scottish urban planner Patrick Geddes.
I think that this aligns not only with our sociopolitical actions, but with our actions within our business, our actions within our home, as well as the actions we take with our body.
In order to accomplish the broader outcomes we want, we have to be specific with our actions. For example, if I want to Squat better then I need to assess my current infrastructure and improve the pieces involved in the global action. Every little bit counts.
Your decision to begin recycling, composting, growing your own food may seem like insignificant things, but in reality “in the sum of the parts there are only the parts”. In other words you are a part of something that requires your specific function. We don’t often see the world in this way and I think this is where we are flawed in our thinking. We have so much untapped power to create change and yet many of us are like “The Walking Dead” meandering around mindlessly consuming all that is in front of us. We consume for the sake of consumption with no rhyme or reason.
Some of us are doing the work. Some of us know the power we wield and some of us are building community with others in the midst of it all.
I’ve always believed that even when we don’t realize our power to change others, we are doing just that. I shutter at the idea that being “woke” is somehow a disparaging comment in these days. This word has been stolen from Black revolutionary thought leadership and now is framed as anything those unwilling to question Traditional Models of thought disagree with.
I find myself in this space of Mobility Training, awakened from the Traditional Model of Training. I find myself thinking about health and wellness in a way that seems to move further away from traditional paradigms.
When we open our minds to learning something new. When we self reflect as opposed to pointing fingers and closing our mind when everything we’ve been taught is challenged, we open ourselves to potential.
We so often choose our comforts within the Matrix of our existence over the harsh realities that come with living outside of the illusion. This is understandable. However, if we truly want to change anything then we have to realize that it starts with ourselves.
Your garden, whether that be the one you’re cultivating food in, the brain you cultivate learning and knowledge within, or the physical being that you place energy into improving the movement of, is an investment that will thrive when you take the steps necessary to create change.
It may sound cliché, but “be the change you want to see in the world”.
What You Missed Last Month
Last month we discussed a super important idea around health, which is the importance of Aerobic Exercise. Aerobic exercise gets a bad rap these days, but I can’t stress enough the importance of working on your aerobic fitness in conjunction with your higher intensity work. Check out the post for more on this subject.
