Spinal Health: Move Your Spine More Daily
Why your back may simply need more movement to feel better
All too often we think that our spine is some fragile thing that shouldn’t be moved at all. Because of this, we neglect to train it at all.
When thinking of our spine, we should consider the fact that there is musculature associated with the spine which helps those bones articulate. If we do not access those muscles and learn to contract them, then we are essentially not building strength and resilience of those tissues.
If we don’t train tissues, we lose neurological connection with those tissues. As we lose that connection, our nervous system no longer sees a need to keep the tissue associated with that stuff. Since our body is setup to be lazy…eh ehm… I mean efficient… it is always looking at ways to save on energy costs to do things.
But you need those tissues to do work and you need to articulate the spine just like any other joint, or set of joints in the spines case, in order to maintain the health of those tissues.
In this video my wife is demonstrating Thoraco-Lumbar CARs. It’s a great way to take a significant portion of your spine through the vast majority of the movements it needs.
Flexion and Extension are the fundamental movements of the spine, so you should be doing some forms of flexion and extension on a regular basis as well. Think CAT/COW of some sort. We’ll dive into the need to improve your CAT/COW another time.
Until then, try adding Thoroco-Lumbar CARs in the video below to your daily routine.
