Knee Assessment Series Part 1: Knee Flexion
A deeper look into Assessment of Knee Flexion and Training to improve your knee joints
A part of a full Knee Assessment looks at Flexion and Extension of the knee joint as well as the rotation. Rotation is the fundamental movement of the joint and so we will often begin with looking at how well the joint doest this before moving to the linear qualities like Flexion and Extension.
In this video I’m with my colleague Nicole in Singapore and I have a look at the flexion of her knee joint in the field. This is an example of how I might assess someone out in the field when I don’t have a table in the clinic.
Understanding what the knee is supposed to do and how it is designed to move is an important element of your strength training work.

Knee Assessment Series: Part 2 - What To Do With Our Findings
When conducting an assessment it’s important that we simply record our findings. We shouldn’t go into an assessment looking for anything in particular. We shouldn’t be looking to confirm a bias. All we want to do is find out information. That information will guide us to the next decision we must make. What inputs should we prescribe. Maybe we find deficits in movements. Maybe we find lots of Passive Range, but not enough Active control of that range. Maybe we find that there isn’t enough Passive Range for the activities the person likes to do.
